Information we may collect about you

Personally Identifiable Information

There are instances when we need to collect personally identifiable information (PII) about you, such as your name, title, email address, mailing address, telephone number, social media information, and demographic data. However, where possible, we will take every effort to limit the PII we collect to the essentials of what’s needed for us to process requests and make adjustments to the ICI website. These requests could include but are not necessarily confined to:

  • Signing up to receive our email newsletter or other communications
  • Completing one of our online forms
  • Emailing us with an inquiry or a request
  • Applying for an employment opportunity via our website
  • Interacting with us on social media platforms
  • Becoming a donor/patron/sponsor

Other information we gather

When you visit the Site, we may collect disaggregated data unrelated to PPI. This data will neither be used as nor capable of the identifying or profiling of a specific individual. For example, we use cookies to improve the functionality of our website for visitors. A cookie is a small text file our Site stores in the browser of your local device to load content for you faster.

If concerned about cookies, you can toggle website settings to inform you when one is stored on your device, or you can refuse them. In addition to the cookie consent banners provided, visitors can configure their web browsers to notify, block or accept cookies. Additionally, some web browsers have built-in tools which allow you to block websites from embedding cookies on your devices and from tracking your online activity.

Financial Donations

If you choose to make a donation to the ICI, you will be redirected to an external website managed by Connect Humanity. On their website, your information is governed by Connect Humanity’s Privacy Policy, which you can read here. If you are interested in making a donation to the ICI by another method, please email info@indigenousconnectivity.org.

How we use your personal information

We endeavor to collect the minimal amount of visitor data necessary to improve your experience on our Site. For example, if you sign up for our newsletter we only use the information you provide to email updates to you. In compliance with the Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL), every email newsletter we send includes an unsubscribe option.

Occasionally we rely on third parties to carry out aspects of our mission. As a result, we may periodically share information, consistent with the purposes for which they were provided, with representatives, consultants, and counsel we partner with. For example, if you apply for support to attend an ICI event, we may use the services of an external agent to coordinate your travel. We use your information strictly in accordance with local/regional/territorial jurisdictions, your consent, and for the purposes outlined in our privacy policy. We will never sell or attempt to make a profit from the information you share with us.

If at any point the law requires us to disclose information you have shared, we will attempt to provide you with prior notice (unless we are prohibited) that a request for your information has been made in order to give you an opportunity to object to the disclosure. If you do not challenge the disclosure request, we may be legally required to turn over your information.

Your Digital Rights

You have the right to access, update, and correct inaccuracies in your personal information in our custody and control, subject to certain exceptions prescribed by law. You may request access, updating, and corrections of inaccuracies in personal information we have in our custody or control by contacting us at info@indigenousconnectivity.org. We may request certain personal information for the purposes of verifying the identity of the individual seeking access to their personal information records.

You may have additional rights depending on the country, state, province, or territory in which you reside. For example, if you live in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or the State of California.

Third-party Service Providers

The ICI uses third-party providers to deliver specific services on our website. Each provider has its own privacy policy, linked below:

The ICI’s site also provides links to or interacts with several third-party websites, including interactive links to social media platforms, telephone/VOIP calling services, mapping services, or video hosting websites, often via application programming interfaces (APIs). An API is a set of rules and tools that facilitate different software programs to talk to each other and work together seamlessly, creating a standardized way for them to communicate and share information. The ICI is not responsible for, and does not have any control over, the privacy practices or the content of such third parties.

Data security

We are committed to ensuring the security of your information. We have implemented appropriate technical and organizational measures to safeguard and secure the information we collect online. However, please be aware that no method of transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is 100 per cent secure. While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security. We encourage you to take steps to help protect the confidentiality and security of your account and personal information, including by not sharing your password with others and using a secure browser.

OCAP Principles

At all times we endeavor to be in compliance with the principles of OCAP (Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession both in the manner we collect data and information and in how we use that information. We stand firm in our belief that Indigenous Peoples have the right to determine what data is collected about them, how that data is used, who owns it, and who has access to it.

Questions and feedback

We consider this policy a living document and are seeking input into how we can make it more responsive to the needs and ambitions of Indigenous Peoples across Turtle Island and Inuit Nunaat. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please send them to info@indigenousconnectivity.org.
